This course is a senior/graduate level elective, in which students learn how to build models of complex reacting systems, and how to apply these models to solution of practical problems.

Goals: By the end of this class, students should have:

• An understanding of the reaction pathways that contribute to free radical thermal cracking (pyrolysis) and d-orbital (transition metal) catalysis
• The ability to deduce mechanisms and rate laws from data
• The ability to construct mechanisms that give rise to desired products
• The ability to construct and solve kinetic models of complex reaction systems
• The ability to assess accuracy and value of these models, and use them for process optimization

The ability to make reasonable estimates of unknown quantities using sound engineering judgment
