Stackable Certificates
The Construction Management stackable certificates allow students to obtain credentials in specific focus areas within the construction field. These certificates are designed to enable non-degree-seeking students to earn one or more credentials independent of a bachelor’s program or degree-seeking students to earn credentials while earning course credits toward a Bachelor of Arts in Construction Management degree. Other Engineering majors can also earn these certificates and even pursue a dual degree.
Here are some benefits of obtaining the Construction Management stackable certificates:
- Supplement real-world experience or a hands-on union apprenticeship with specialized construction management knowledge – combine the credibility of time spent on job sites with the tools and soft skills to manage people and process
- Expand marketability within the construction sector, distinguishing oneself as a highly skilled professional equipped with specialized knowledge in construction management.
- Fulfill Engineering program elective requirements.
- Meet Course Program of Study (CPoS) requirements

Construction Management Certificate
The Construction Management certificate is designed for students entering the construction field and looking to get a fundamental understanding of how the industry works. The certificate will introduce students to the history of the building trades and how the fragmentation of the construction trades has evolved over the years starting with a master builder to the current market conditions. Students will learn the roles & responsibilities of the main construction project participants, including project owners, architects, engineers, construction managers, and subcontractors. The certificate covers the standard design phases: programming, conceptual design, schematic design, design development, construction documents, and construction administration. In addition, students will learn various project control systems for project efficiency, documentation, and essential elements related to contract law. Lastly, students will learn to identify the equipment and materials used in mechanical systems for heating, ventilating, and air conditioning, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, piping, gas, lighting, water and waste water, conveyance, life safety systems, environmental, security, audio/visual, building systems controls, and building envelope systems.

Project Management Certificate
The Project Management Certificate is intended for students who have a basic understanding of construction processes and are prepared for more in-depth industry knowledge. After completing this certificate, students can estimate construction costs, including direct and indirect project costs, perform job cost analysis, and forecast cost to completion, labor, material and equipment expenses, cash flow, overhead, profitability, and general condition costs. Students will also learn scheduling and planning techniques essential to managing a construction project, including critical path methods, work breakdown structures, activity durations, resource allocation, replanning, monitoring, and updating of construction projects. This certificate builds on the Construction Management certificate by providing a conceptual understanding of the function and performance of energy systems including mechanical, electrical, electronic and plumbing and transport systems. The students will be introduced to concepts of alternative energy sources, energy efficiency, structural implications of mechanical systems, indoor air quality, and environmental control strategy. In addition, students will learn the latest sustainability and green building ratings. Lastly, students will become familiar with construction building codes, reference to the International Building Codes (IBC), and learn how the code was developed, interpreted, and applied to the design and construction of buildings. The certificate also covers concepts related to space use and occupancy, types of contraction, fire-resistive construction, interior finishes, building materials, inspections, and tests.

Construction Leadership Certificate
The Construction Leadership certificate is designed for students who wish to learn how to operate within the unionized environment of the construction industry. The certificate covers various perspectives on collective bargaining systems, including the legal and regulatory environment, problem-solving techniques, and the roles of labor and corporation. The certificate also addresses issues related to safety and health hazards in the construction environment including program development, safety and health program implementation, and prevention. The certificate features updates for construction regulations, construction job audit, training requirements, and OSHA regulations. In addition, this certificate is designed to prepare students to become more effective leaders and communicators in the construction industry. Students will define and role-play effective communication strategies that simulate situations they may encounter within the industry such as general-subcontractor interactions and corporate and labor relations. Principles of negotiation and disputes resolution are also covered in this certificate. Lastly, as part of the Construction Leadership certificate, students will become experts in a particular issue within their specific trade. Students will analyze their work environment, search for ways to improve the daily operations, and improve productivity for their respective companies. The applied research contained within the Construction Leadership certificate will allow students to become subject matter experts ready to lead construction units and/or their very own construction companies.
