Advanced Materials & Manufacturing Institute (AMMI)

The Advanced Materials & Manufacturing Institute (AMMI) works to create a strong materials science and education system for Rowan University and its affiliated research partners.

Engaging faculty and staff expertise from multiple colleges across the University, AMMI will:
  • Develop next-generation materials
  • Advance manufacturing technologies
  • Forge industry/University/government partnerships
  • Train a future workforce benefitting South Jersey, the state and nation


AMMI is built upon the University’s successes in materials-centric research collaborations with a host of federal agencies and industry partners. Among them, a $14.5 million Department of Defense combined award in which Rowan leads a multi-university industry team, alongside U.S. Army scientists and engineers, to develop innovative polymers and composites as well as techniques to produce such materials. The materials are being developed using direct-write manufacturing technologies, including cold spray additive manufacturing.

AMMI enhances Rowan University’s commitment to education and to improving sustainability with a focus on feedstock source, functional utility, and end-of-life upscaling. Materials developed in the institute will have use beyond military applications with strong potential for use in civil aviation, automobiles, health care and space exploration.

The mission of AMMI is to advance fundamental and applied science and engineering technology related to materials and manufacturing with the vision to utilize nature’s chemistries, both renewable and fossil reserves, to enhance material performance and improve our global sustainability by gaining a comprehensive understanding of the processing-structure-property relationships of our materials through advanced experimental, analytical, and modeling techniques.
