Prof. Suplick is a seasoned engineering professional currently serving as the Director of Engineering and Energy Planning for Facilities and Real Estate Services at the University of Pennsylvania. He has been leading engineering operations with a focus on facility improvement, project design and construction, energy conservation, and cost efficiency for 13 years. He supervises a team of 10 engineers and manages a $55-million facility renewal fund with responsibility for overseeing capital projects for deferred maintenance from initial scope development through start-up. His role also contributes to strategic planning efforts, including campus planning, new building programming, sustainability and energy reduction plans. He was the lead on Penn’s execution of a power purchase agreement that resulted in the construction of the largest solar generation facility east of the Mississippi River that went into operation in 2023.
Before joining the University of Pennsylvania, he was the Assistant Chief of Operations at Rowan University and prior to that served as the Director of Facilities at Philadelphia University (now Jefferson University). In those roles, he directed facility operations for campuses from 1-2 million square feet and 20 to 150 tradespeople. Under his leadership, the Phila U. facilities department received APPA’s Award for Excellence, which is the highest recognition for higher education facilities management. He also played a key role in campus capital projects including the construction of a new athletic facility and student center as well as leading initiatives in energy conservation and sustainable practices.
His career prior to higher education facility management includes time as an engineering designer and project manager for capital projects for electric power generation, pharmaceutical production, environmental remediation, and other types of industries. He has also been a property insurance underwriter for large engineered risks such as bridges, airports, tunnels and dams as well as for builder’s risk coverages of large construction projects.
Outside of his professional career, he is a member of the Schuylkill Township Zoning Hearing Board and volunteers as a township poll worker. He is also a member of the Valley Forge National Park’s Volunteers-In-Parks program working on trail repairs and maintenance. He is an avid DIYer and spends his free time working around his home that includes a former blacksmith shop and a 170-year-old barn that are all on the historic register in Chester County, PA.
