The research program is focused on the development of biomimetic nanomatrix platforms to provide biochemical and micro-electric stimuli for vascular and tissue healing therapies and regenerative medicine. Cardiovascular and cardiometabolic diseases remain a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. It is crucial to promote vascular healing and regeneration for the treatment and care of these diseases. To achieve this, first, therapeutic targets of several vascular-related diseases are examined and identified including 1). diabetic foot ulcer care, 2). myocardial infarction treatment, and 3). arteriovenous fistula maturation for dialysis in chronic kidney disease. Then, tailored biomimetic peptide-based nanomatrix platforms in combination with self-powered electric stimulators can be applied to each disease target. Several component delivery systems are integrated in the platforms such as biochemical and electrical cues based on the targets. The development of nanomatrix platforms will provide disease-specific therapeutic solutions and also offer novel insights to study the effects of biochemical or micro-electric stimuli on pathological and therapeutic targets.
