ADD (4+1) Program
Accelerated BS/MS Dual Degree Program in Mechanical Engineering
The Accelerated BS/MS Dual Degree Program in Mechanical Engineering (ADD (4+1) Program) permits students to complete the 120-credit BS-ME and the 30-credit MS-ME degree (Non-Thesis Option) programs in under five years, while keeping coursework at a manageable full-time load and with a modest tuition and fee discount. Students may take up to 12 credits of graduate-level coursework while enrolled as undergraduate students in this program.
Coursework attempted at the graduate level does not double-count as coursework attempted at the undergraduate level. Accordingly, students interested in this program should ensure sufficient space in their respective undergraduate schedules to maximize its advantages; the related Senior Privilege program may also be of interest as an alternative option for students seeking access to graduate-level education while still at the undergraduate level. Note that the Accelerated BS/MS Dual Degree Program and Senior Privilege program cannot be combined or used simultaneously.
*Please note that each ADD program may have slight difference, therefore refer for specifics to the document for ME Department.

How many graduate-level courses/credits overall will I need to take while doing my ADD/4+1 program?
You will take four (4) graduate level courses (12 credits) in your senior year. The remaining 18 credits (~6 courses) you will take in your fifth (+1) year, when you will be enrolled as a graduate student. Overall, to fulfill the requirements for a Master's in Mechanical Engineering degree, you will need 30 credits in total with grades of B- or higher.
Can I use Senior Privileges and combine them with ADD to double count courses/credits?
No, unfortunately you cannot choose to be enrolled in ADD and Senior Privilege at the same time. You can only choose one.
What are the criteria to be able to enroll in ADD/4+1 program?
- Student must have completed a minimum of 79 credits of their respective BS-ME coursework, including 70 credits of STEM coursework AND
- Cumulative GPA of at least 3.3 out of 4.0 AND
- Grades of C+ or better in the foundation courses
How do I sign up for the program?
Please follow these steps:
- Check if you satisfy the criteria listed above. (Send info about your GPA and number of credits to the Graduate Program Chair).
- Fill out the ADD Student Agreement and Confirmation Form (PDF)
- Send the signed form to the ME Graduate Program Coordinator (GPC)
- GPC will send the form to the Registrar's Office
Please send the following information (bullet points 1-5) in an email to the Graduate Program Coordinator and confirm that you read the following information (bullet points 6-9) :
Please confirm the following.
- Are you currently a ME junior?
- How many credits have you completed so far?
- What is your GPA? Is it over 3.3?
- What is your expected graduation date for a BS degree?
- Do you have room in your schedule for 4 graduate courses?
- Please confirm that you are aware that the graduate course cannot be double counted toward your BS degree. They will be purely on your graduate transcript counting only toward your MS degree.
- Note that you cannot take the 'same' course offered at 400 and 500 level at Rowan.
- Let me know which two graduate-level courses you would like to register for. Provide course number, name, and CRN. You can
- Please check in Section Tally and confirm there is still room in those classes.
Please answer or confirm each bullet point above to enable smooth transition into the ADD program.
How do I register for the graduate courses while an undergraduate student?
- For students who are in their UG program and will still be in their UG program the next semester, requests for graduate registration should be sent by the graduate Program Coordinator (not from the student) to the Registrar at this email address (registrarassist@rowan.edu) to manually register the student accordingly. The Registrar will register students during the first day of the registration period (e.g., for Fall 2025 courses, the registration begins March 25).
- Check if there is still available space in the section of the course you are trying to register for.
- Provide the CRN, course number, course title, section and availability in an email that you send to the Graduate Program Coordinator.
- For students who are finishing their UG program and transitioning to their GR program the next semester, they will be able to self-register for graduate coursework once the Registrar receives their ADD Transition Form. The Registrar can process that form after the student has applied for graduation. As long as the students transitioned to their graduate program, they should be able to self-register once registration opens up.
Can electives of the 'same' course that I took under 400-level count as my graduate 500-level course? Or can I retake it as a 500-level course if I previously took it as a 400-level?
No. We do not allow students to take the same 400 and 500 level course. In most courses at Rowan, the topics covered are similar (despite variation in requirements) and we try to avoid students taking duplicate courses for their BS and MS degrees.
What should I do if the course I am trying to register for is full?
You can contact the instructor and ask if there is some additional availability and request a capacity waiver. However, all classes have a maximum seat capacity and instructors cannot accommodate any requests beyond a certain point. Note that it is up to the discretion of the instructor to decide based on the provided (strong) argument from the student, whether the request can be accommodated. If approved, the instructor will provide a capacity override that will allow you to register (assuming you have all prerequisites). Note that the Graduate Program Coordinator cannot provide you a capacity override.
Can I contact the Graduate Program Coordinator/Chair if the course I am trying to register for is at full capacity?
No, the Graduate Program Coordinator will not be able to assist you. You must address this question to the instructor directly (see question above).
Can a Graduate Program Coordinator (GPC) create a schedule for me due to my special circumstances (e.g., commute, etc)?
No, the Graduate Program Coordinator can only help you with specific questions you may have and advise; however, they cannot create an individualized schedule for you.
How can I plan for my course schedule?
To help you with the course planning, we suggest a few things.
- Please look at Section Tally for all graduate-level courses available in the upcoming semester. It is available at the following link:
https://sites.rowan.edu/registrar/services-resources/section-tally-info.html - Search for the desired semester. Check attributes as specified in the attached image. Please use both ENGR and MECH and choose Attribute GRAD as shown below.
- If you need to search for the previous semesters, you can use the old Section Tally. See below.

What information do I need to provide when contacting an instructor or graduate program coordinator?
Please always provide the following information:
- Banner ID
- In what semester of studies are you currently enrolled in? (e.g., is this your first, or fourth semester etc.)
- Full course name, number, and CRN
- Describe your problem in sufficient details
- Attach history of previous conversations/emails if relevant
What rate of tuition and fees will I need to pay for the graduate-level course under ADD?
The graduate-level courses taken as an undergraduate student (~12 credits) will be charged at the undergraduate rate.
