CE Minor

The CE Minor is designed to provide non-CE majors knowledge of the topics common to a civil engineering degree. All courses in the minor are taught in the CE major and therefore are taught in a manner consistent with the major’s Program Goals, Student Learning Goals, and Student Learning Outcomes as presented for ABET accreditation. The CE Minor consists of 18 or 19 credit hours, depending on the sequence pursued.

This minor provides additional students access to the coursework in civil engineering. The work environment is increasingly collaborative and providing the opportunity for a student to be educated in an additional area of study will increase their job opportunities and help to create a more productive workforce.

Coursework

Students in the minor choose one of two sequences of courses within CE. The sequences were selected in order to provide students the opportunity to obtain depth in sub-areas of civil engineering through selections of courses that follow a logical progression of prerequisites. All students in the minor must take the required course. The student then selects the structures sequence OR the Environmental/Water Resources Sequence.

Two Civil Engineering Structures Electives selected with an advisor (6 cr)

Environmental/Water Resources Sequence (17 cr)

CE 08305 – Civil Engineering Systems (3 cr)

ENGR 01341 – Fluid Mechanics (2 cr)

CE 08311 – Environmental Engineering I (3 cr)

Requirements for Admission and Graduation

Admission

Admission requires approval of the CE program chair or associate chair. A student will need to complete Calculus I and Calculus II, Chemistry I, and Introductory Mechanics before being considered for acceptance into the minor. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required for admission into the CE Minor, but this minimum GPA may be raised as space limitations dictate. Students should be aware that most upper level courses in CE also require Calculus III, Linear Algebra, and Ordinary Differential Equations (or equivalents) as prerequisites and selection of courses should be done in consultation with an advisor.

Graduation

Completion of 18 or 19 credit hours following one of the recommended sequences of courses within the minor is required. Students must have a 2.0 GPA in the minor courses.

Student Status

Students must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 in the required minor courses
