PIPES (Professional Industrial Partnership Engagement for Students)

The department offers the PIPES (Professional Industrial Partnership Engagement for Students) program in which students can enroll for their junior/senior engineering clinics with an external engineering firm in lieu of a faculty led project. This program allows students to work full time at company X during the Fall and Spring semesters of their junior/senior year. The student has to apply for the PIPES program describing the nature of the work to be conducted. The department clinic coordinator and department head review the information provided and grant permission to enroll in this program. Students have to present their work and also submit a technical report. Correspondence is also set up with their company liaison to ensure the student is making valuable contributions to the approved project. PIPES FAQs

Do I have to be in the PIPES program for all Junior/Senior clinics?

No. You can apply for PIPES any semester of your choice.

Can I begin PIPES in January for the Spring semester, or is Fall enrollment required?

You can pick whatever semester you want.

Are single-semester PIPES internships allowed, or is participation expected across both Fall and Spring semesters?

Yes-single semester PIPES is allowed.

Weekly hours

Students should work 10 hours per week to satisfy clinic requirements. Any extra time is their choice.

What is the typical courseload students maintain while in the PIPES program?

Usually 15 -17 credits

Can I find my own PIPES sponsor?

Yes. Students are encouraged to find a sponsor.

Can the department help identify a PIPES sponsor?

Yes. However, we cannot guarantee a PIPES opportunity. We can provide names of companies that are seeking students. The student will have to interview and secure the position.

PIPES PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS THAT STUDENTS AGREE TO:

I understand that I will receive a grade for my work.

I will make a 15 minute presentation during the clinic final presentations.

I will submit a technical report on my project work according to the report guidelines provided by the faculty instructor.

I will be working for at least 10 hours per week to satisfy my clinic requirements.

I understand that I cannot quit in the middle of the semester as this is still a graded course. Quitting will result in an F grade.

I understand that I can fail the course if I do not go to work.
