COGS
Certificate of Graduate Studies (COGS)
Mechanical Engineering graduate students interested in the Certificate of Graduate Studies can sign up at the beginning of the fall semester by sending an email to Prof. Trkov at trkov@rowan.edu. Students must have completed B.S. degree in related engineering and science fields and completed the following fundamental courses (MATH 01.230 Calculus III or MATH 01.210 Linear Algebra) or their equivalents with a minimum GPA of 3.0 or have relevant career experience that includes background in fundamental courses. The Certificate of Graduate Studies will then be added to the student's profile. Students who are not Mechanical Engineering majors can email Prof. Trkov at trkov@rowan.edu. The Mechanical Engineering Department offers COGS in the following areas:
Students who wish to receive a paper certificate should complete the Certificate of Completion Processing Form and submit to the registrar after grades are posted. Those that were already approved for the COGS do not need to obtain the signature in Part IV.
COGS in Robotics and Mechatronics
This COGS will allow students to take specialized graduate-level coursework in dynamics, controls, programing, and materials that are related to the fields of robotics and mechatronics. Students will be able to obtain individual COGS, stack them, or simultaneously accumulate credits towards the terminal degree requirement of Master’s or Doctoral program in Mechanical Engineering.
Program prerequisites:
- Students must have completed B.S. degree in related engineering and science fields.
- Must have completed the following fundamental courses (or their equivalents) with a minimum GPA of 3.0 or have relevant career experience that includes background in fundamental courses.
- MATH 01.230 Calculus III or MATH 01.210 Linear Algebra
- Any prerequisites of the courses that make up this program.
Students will complete at least one class (3 s.h.) from the following ‘Required’ courses:
| Course # | Course Name | Credits |
| ME 10.542 | Advanced Mechatronics | 3 |
| ME 10.556 | Advanced Mechatronics | 3 |
| Subtotal: | ≥3 sh | |
Students will complete at least one class (3 s.h.) from the following ‘Fundamental’ courses:
| Course # | Course Name | Credits |
| ME 10.566 | Soft Robotics | 3 |
| ME 10.565 | Advanced Methods for Dynamic Control Systems | 3 |
| ECE 09.556 | Advanced Embedded Software Design | 3 |
| ECE 09.580 | Internet of Things | 3 |
| Subtotal: | ≥3 sh | |
Students will complete at most two classes (6 s.h) from the following ‘Elective’ courses:
| Course # | Course Name | Credits |
| ME 10.501 | Computer Integrated Manufacturing And Automation | 3 |
| ME 10.541 | Advanced Mechanism Design | 3 |
| ME 10.553 | Analytical Dynamics | 3 |
| ME 10.543 | Advanced Design for X | 3 |

| ECE 09.521 | Fundamentals of Systems Engineering | 3 |
| ECE 09.555 | Machine Learning | 3 |
| ECE 09.558 | Reinforcement Learning | 3 |
| ECE 09.573 | Advanced Smart Sensors | 3 |
| ECE 09.585 | Advanced Engineering Cyber Security | 3 |
| CS 07.645 | Advanced Robotics | 3 |
| Subtotal: | ≤6 sh | |
*All 12 credits (4 courses) can simultaneously count towards this COGS and only one degree (i.e., B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. degree) in Mechanical Engineering at Rowan University.
Alternatively, a maximum of 6 credits (2 courses) from this COGS may be applied to different COGS, CUGS, or minor within Mechanical Engineering or another department; however, these credits may not be used toward more than two programs or certificates simultaneously.
No triple or more counting of credits is permitted.
** Students enrolled in Senior Privilege or Accelerated Dual Degree (ADD) or ‘4+1’ can use graduate level course credits obtained during their undergraduate studies to double count towards this COGS and at most one of the following: another CUGS, COGS, minor, BS degree, or graduate degree. No triple counting is allowed.
*** Students must obtain grade of at least B- or higher in each course, and must obtain a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 across all 12 credits (4 courses) to obtain COGS.
