Co-op Programs in Mechanical Engineering
Rowan Mechanical Engineering offers optional 6–9 month co-op opportunities that allow qualified students to gain substantial industry experience while maintaining a path to complete their B.S. degree in four years.
The ME co-op program is open to qualified and interested students. Students typically work full-time for an industry partner during the summer between their junior and senior years and continue through the Fall semester of their senior year. Students must complete the required junior-level courses before beginning the co-op.
Co-op opportunities provide valuable professional experience and allow students to apply their mechanical engineering knowledge and skills in an industrial setting. Participation is competitive and determined by the respective company. Most companies conduct information sessions and interviews during the Fall semester of the junior year. The department will share information about available opportunities and company information sessions. Students should plan ahead and apply during their junior year.
Curricular Overview
Students must work with their ME academic advisor and company co-op manager to develop a course schedule that allows them to participate in the co-op program while maintaining full-time enrollment during the senior Fall semester at Rowan University. Students should plan their courses carefully to accommodate the co-op and complete all degree requirements on time.
The senior Fall co-op experience counts for 4 credits of Senior Engineering Clinic. All co-op students must submit the required Senior Engineering Clinic Final Report based on their co-op experience to receive these credits.
Some co-op opportunities require a specific Certificate of Undergraduate Study (CUGS) designated by the company. Students participating in these programs should plan their CUGS coursework with their academic advisor and co-op manager.
Planning
- Complete all required junior-level courses before starting the co-op.
- Apply for co-op opportunities during the junior year according to each company's schedule. Attend the information sessions offered by the company.
- Work with your ME academic advisor and company co-op manager to identify courses that allow you to work at the company while maintaining full-time enrollment at Rowan during the senior Fall semester.
- If participating in a co-op associated with a CUGS, plan the required CUGS courses early.
- Complete the Summer and Fall co-op experience.
- Submit the required Senior Engineering Clinic Final Report to receive the 4 Senior Clinic credits.
