What is the first field of engineering that comes to your mind when you think of future, emerging, new technologies? If you guessed “Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE),” you guessed it right! ECE has always been at the forefront of technology, it is *the* discipline that defines and creates future technologies (and the discipline whose graduates are paid the highest!). Yet, ECE is such a vast discipline, most high school students do not know what exactly electrical and computer engineers do.
Here is your opportunity to find out! If you are a current high school student and interested in a career in science and technology, we invite you to come and join us to EXCEL: Explore Xciting Careers in Electrical and Computer Engineering. This unforgettable three-day, non-residential summer workshop experience will include laboratory clinics, hands-on engineering projects, tours and mentoring by the faculty of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
In ECE, future is what we do. Join us and learn how!
Here's what awaits you:
- Explore exciting topics in ECE: Get your hands dirty with workshops on circuits, electronics, robotics, machine learning, sound engineering, power systems, communications, game design, and more
- Delve into laboratory clinics: Gain practical experience with technology and test your design ideas.
- Learn from the best: Receive expert guidance and mentorship from professors of Rowan's renowned ECE program.
- Connect with like-minded peers: Forge lasting friendships with other aspiring engineers from across the region.

Rowan's Exploring Xciting Careers in Electrical & Computer Engineering (EXCEL) is a three-day, non-residential workshop experience that features laboratory clinics, exciting engineering activities, campus & lab tours, and mentoring by ECE faculty. Students from high schools throughout the region are invited to learn many facets of electrical and computer engineering, various careers that an ECE degree may lead to, and why ECE is the broadest and furthest reaching (and best paid!) of any engineering discipline. Participants will have any opportunity to work on various hands-on projects throughout the event.
The event will include the following sessions:
- Welcome to ECE: Future is What We Do! (Career information about ECE)
- Safety first!
- Buidling your first circuit (participants who already have some basic circuit experience will be provided with a more advanced option)
- Sound & Audio engineering: Learn how sounds can be created, processed and replayed.
- Games for education
- Control systems
- Robotics
- Communications
- Lab and facility tours
- Mentoring by ECE faculty and staff
Also, please note that:
- Closed-toe shoes are required for all EXCEL days. Also, no loose clothing, jewelry, food, or drink is allowed in the labs (please leave any jewelry at home or simply remove it and place it in your bag during lab time).
- This program does not include food, so please eat a hearty breakfast!
- A water fountain is available on each floor of the building. If you wish, you may bring a water bottle, but remember that no food or water may be consumed in the labs. There will be a dedicated space for water bottles during lab activities
