COGS in Systems Engineering
COGS in Systems Engineering
Certificate of Graduate Study in Systems Engineering
Systems engineering involves the design, integration, and management of complex and large-scale systems over their life cycles. As such, Systems Engineering bridges many of the existing engineering disciplines, as design, integration, and management of complex, large-scale systems are common to all engineering disciplines. While the nation’s institutions of higher education graduate a sufficient number of professionals in core traditional engineering disciplines, there is an unmet need for qualified professionals who have the necessary knowledge and skills to integrate such complex and large-scale systems across different disciplines. Furthermore, while there are master's level graduate programs in Systems Engineering, not all professionals have the time to pursue a full-length MS program, and hence, would prefer a shorter certificate program that focuses on core areas. This Certificate of Graduate Studies program in Systems Engineering is designed to meet this growing demand by providing a strong foundation, skills, and knowledge on which the participants can build a successful career. The COGS in Systems Engineering consists of the four core courses of the M.S. in Systems Engineering. Therefore, students who complete this COGS can easily complete their M.S. in Systems Engineering simply by taking the relevant electives in any of the focus areas of the M.S. in Systems Engineering.
Program Features
- The Certificate of Graduate Study (COGS) in Systems Engineering has been developed by the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering with the goal of preparing graduates who can work in a variety of organizations (private industry and government) that use systems engineering, specifically with respect to design and integration of complex, large-scale systems. The global market in this area is rapidly expanding.
- Students will learn about the fundamentals of systems engineering, including model-based systems engineering, reliability / quality control and project management.
- The curriculum includes four courses: two required courses and two additional courses selected from a specific bank of courses.
Minimum Grade and Cumulative GPA Requirements
- Open to graduate students from Engineering as well as any students who have the interest and relevant background.
- Students may be either matriculated or nonmatriculated at Rowan University.
- Students must obtain at least a B- or higher in each course, and must obtain a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 across all courses.
- Students may apply all four courses taken as part of this COGS towards the degree requirements of other ECE graduate programs, including M.S. in ECE, M.S. is Systems Engineering, and Ph.D. in ECE.
- While a relevant and preapproved ECE 09.504 Special Topics in ECE class may be counted towards both the COGS (for which it is approved) and an ECE graduate degree program, the same specific ECE 09.504 Special Topics in ECE class cannot be counted towards a different COGS.
- Students in non-ECE graduate degree majors who pursue this COGS should follow the course double-counting policies of the department in which their major resides.

Program Evaluation
- All courses include assignments and exams on which performance data will be collected each semester.
- The results will be assessed at the department level as well as guided by feedback from all stakeholders, including the industry.
- Programmatic changes to enhance learning outcomes will be as frequent as needed.
