Research Overview
The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Rowan University has an interdisciplinary research program. Our faculty and research staff partner with government laboratories and industries as well as other departments and colleges at Rowan University. These collaborative efforts lead to fundamental discoveries in various areas of science and engineering.
Major Research Areas
Reacting Flows
Reacting flows focus on combustion processes drawing from fields of combustion chemistry, fluid flow, and various heat- and mass-transfer mechanisms.
Faculty: Dr. Smitesh Bakrania, Dr. Francis (Mac) Haas
Human Machine Interface
Human Machine Interface (HMI) focus on devices capable of handling human-machine interactions. This can be hardware, software, or a combination of both, allowing a users input to be translated as a useful signal for a machine. This technology has been used in different industries like electronics, entertainment, industrial processed, military, medical, etc.
Faculty: Dr. Francis (Mac) Haas, Dr. Anu Osta, Dr. Mitja Trkov, Dr. Wei Xue, Dr. Hong Zhang
Advanced Biomimetic Structures
Biomimetics focuses on studying nature to solve complex human problems. Nature has had several thousands of years of natural selection, often resulting in elegant solutions to the worlds problems, if studied and explored. Biomimetic structures can be found at nano and macro scales and have been applied in different industries like communications, energy, textiles, synthetic materials, etc.
Faculty: Dr. Mitja Trkov
Multifunctional Materials
The Multifunctional Materials research area focuses on the design and development of materials that perform multiple functionalities. At Rowan ME we are mostly interested in design, manufacturing, characterization, and optimization of materials and material systems that have a combination of excellent structural, chemical, thermal, and electrical properties. These materials are used in aerospace, electronics, energy, medicine, military, etc.
Faculty: Dr. Smitesh Bakrania, Dr. Francis (Mac) Haas, Dr. Ratneshwar (Ratan) Jha, Dr. Behrad Koohbor, Dr. Chen Shen, Dr. Wei Xue
Energy Storage Technology
The Energy Storage Technology research area is primarily focused on materials, devices, and systems that are used for electrical energy storage. These systems include, but are not limited to, batteries, capacitors, and supercapactiors. These technologies are used in industries such as consumer goods, power grids, transportation, and wireless devices.
Faculty: Dr. Smitesh Bakrania, Dr. Behrad Koohbor
